Portugal proposes draft e-Privacy Regulation for EU governments' agreement

( February 8, 2021, 15:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Portugal, which is leading talks on behalf of EU governments during the first half of the year, has proposed a compromise text of the EU's e-Privacy Regulation. The text includes measures to allow telecom companies the "further compatible processing" of users' metadata that will allow them to compete with "over the top" players such as WhatsApp and Skype. The draft also includes an assurance that governments can approve laws allowing them to retain data for security and law-enforcement purposes.
