Comment: First legally binding international AI convention faces uphill struggle as hype cools

By Frank Hersey ( August 8, 2024, 09:29 GMT | Comment) -- No state has yet submitted its plans for an independent mechanism or body to oversee the implementation of the Council of Europe’s convention on AI, the organization has told MLex. This signals a new kind of potential delay. The Brussels brouhaha around who will sign the convention for the bloc is so bad it might even delay the signing ceremony. Moreover, the lack of an oversight mechanism from any signatory so far suggests the post-signature path to ratification could be long and winding. It could be some time until two parties ratify and the “international” and “legally binding” boxes can be ticked.Businesses are getting ready for the EU AI Act, which came into force last week. A similar treaty could have a far broader global reach, but the path for signing and ratifying remains unclear....
