Comment: Internal Google emails expose ads giant to risk of high-stakes US privacy trial next year

By Mike Swift ( July 29, 2024, 23:18 GMT | Comment) -- Google says that a series of internal emails sent between 2017 and 2020 were an effort by the plaintiffs to "cherry-pick" a few damaging communications that the plaintiffs intentionally took out of context. The dispute over the context and accuracy of the emails, however, may not insulate Google from the threat of a jury trial where hundreds of millions of dollars would be at stake, as the judge overseeing the case suggested a jury may have to be the factfinder that decides the dispute.Google software engineer Chris Ruemmler in 2019 typed out what he said was a key privacy problem for users, a setting in the Android mobile operating system called “Web & App Activity” that when switched on allows Google to log data such as geographic location and purchases that users make on its advertisers’ websites....
