Google enters deal with US DOJ to upgrade legal process compliance, after spending $90 million to upgrade system

( October 25, 2022, 21:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: In a first-of-its-kind resolution, Google has agreed to reform and upgrade its legal process compliance program to ensure timely and complete responses to legal process such as subpoenas and search warrants, a program on which the Internet giant has already spent more than $90 million, according to a settlement between the company and the US Department of Justice ending litigation filed in 2016. In responding to a federal investigation of the criminal cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e in 2016, Google followed a ruling by the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that said Microsoft didn't have to provide data stored on servers outside the United States to US law enforcement. Until Congress passed the Cloud Act, which clarified that the US law does indeed reach data that US cloud providers choose to store overseas, Google would only provide federal officials with evidence about BTC-e stored on US servers, and as a result of those delays, data sought by US officials was lost.DOJ statement and document follow below:...
