Emissions declined faster in 2013, but surplus of allowances persists, EU's Hedegaard says

( May 14, 2014, 15:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Greenhouse gas emissions from installations participating in the EU's emission trading system decreased by 3 percent in 2013, according to data published by the European Commission today. EU climate chief Connie Hedegaard noted there was still a "growing surplus of emission allowances that risks undermining the [...] functioning of the carbon market." EU decision-makers should therefore act "swiftly" to vote through a market-intervention plan to address the issue, she said.Statement follows.
