EC Statement: Answer to MEP question - Privatisation of TAP and concentration in the aviation sector in the EU

( January 3, 2012, 11:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Commission has fended off concerns by a left-wing MEP that the privatisation of Portuguese airline TAP would lead to the sale of the company which in turn would create another monopolistic situation in the market. In response to the question, Olli Rehn said that concentrations between airlines have been subject to merger and/or antitrust scrutiny and that remedies have been imposed in every case giving rise to competition problems. He added that the Portuguese carrier, through the Star Alliance code sharing agreement, does no longer operate as an exclusively national company and that another airline has already announced to establish its base at the Lisbon airport, thus contributing to increased competition in the market.Subject: Privatisation of TAP and concentration in the aviation sector in the EU...
