WhatsApp, Signal, other messaging apps warn UK online safety law risks 'privacy of billions'

( April 18, 2023, 06:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta Platforms' WhatsApp and six other online messaging services have warned of privacy risks from the UK's draft content-moderation law, currently under review by lawmakers. In an open letter today that calls on the UK government to "urgently rethink" the Online Safety Bill, they warn that it could "break end-to-end encryption, opening the door to routine, general and indiscriminate surveillance of personal messages." It could give "an unelected official the power to weaken the privacy of billions of people around the world," they say. The bill includes a provision that critics say could force companies to scan messages on encrypted apps for any child sexual abuse or terrorist content, if asked to do so by regulator Ofcom.Statement follows....
