Singtel Optus Australian data breach faces privacy investigation

( October 10, 2022, 23:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Singtel Optus's mass-data breach in Australia, which saw the personal information of millions of customers compromised, has prompted a formal investigation by the country's privacy watchdog. In a statement today, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said the probe would look at Optus's information handling practices and whether the company took reasonable steps to protect information. The probe will be coordinated with Australia's media regulator. If the investigation finds serious or repeated interferences with privacy that breach Australian privacy law, the OAIC can seek civil penalties through of up to A$2.2 million for each contravention.The full statement from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner follows:...
