Australians lose record $2 billion to scams in 2022, consumer regulator says

( April 17, 2023, 00:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australians lost a record A$3.1 billion ($2 billion) to scams in 2022, despite a drop in the overall number of scams over the year, the Australian consumer regulator said. In a new report, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said investment scams were the highest loss category, followed by remote access and then payment-redirection scams. Millions of Australians became more vulnerable to scams in 2022, following a spate of large-scale, high-profile data breaches late last year, the report found. In a statement accompanying the latest figures, ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said that in the weeks following last year's mass-data breaches, the ACCC's dedicated scam-reporting hotline received "hundreds of reports [...] including reports of scammers impersonating government departments and businesses to carry out identity theft and remote access scams.”The full statement from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission follows; the report is attached: ...
