South Korea's new privacy chief pledges rigorous enforcement against privacy violations

Ko Hak-soo, who was sworn in today as the new chairman of the Personal Information Protection Commission, promised to take tough action against personal data leaks from both the private and public sectors as well as to fortify the country's preventative measures.With a new chairman at the helm, South Korea's data-protection agency is starting a new chapter in its history, one in which it will continue to enforce severe sanctions for privacy violations of any type, wherever they may occur. “I promise to take tough action against personal data leaks from both the private and public sectors as well as to fortify the country's preventative measures,” said Ko Hak-soo, who was sworn in today as the new chairman of the Personal Information Protection Commission, or PIPC.  The remarks came during his inaugural speech to a small group of staffers at the Seoul government complex where he outlined some of the policy goals he plans to pursue over the next three years. Having spent more than 20 years as a lawyer and scholar researching topics like data and artificial intelligence, Ko noted that data breaches, various forms of data abuse and illicit trades of personal data on the dark web have all increased, stoking fears and worries about personal privacy being compromised....
