South Korean telecom giants hit with antitrust complaint for allegedly controlling sale of 5G packages

( January 12, 2021, 09:21 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: KT, SK Telecom and LG UPlus, three major South Korean telecom operators, were hit by an antitrust complaint filed by the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, a Seoul-based non-governmental organization, to the Korea Fair Trade Commission. The PSPD alleged the companies, which hold a 90 percent share in the country’s telecom market, required customers to sign up for expensive 5G plans when they purchased the latest smartphones. The PSPD said the companies abused their dominance by “unfairly controlling the sale of goods or the provision of services,” and harming consumer benefits, which is in violation of the antitrust law. They called on the telecom companies to let customers freely choose mobile phone packages.The complaint letter, in Korean, is attached....
