Scrap metal recycling merger's in-depth probe to focus on price, service quality, supply reduction

( March 14, 2018, 09:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: European Metal Recycling’s purchase of rival Metal & Waste Recycling could result in a substantial lessening of competition, the UK's competition watchdog said in a report that sets out the scope of an in-depth probe of the deal. The Competition and Markets Authority said the nature of the scrap metal industry means that recyclers may be each other’s competitors, suppliers and customers. The merger could therefore lead to worsening prices and service quality, a reduction in the supply of shredding services in certain areas and a reduction in the supply of ferrous and non-ferrous process scrap metal in the UK. The CMA has invited submissions to aid the second phase of its probe.Full statement is attached ...
