Facial recognition usage by Swedish school: judges uphold regulator's decision

( June 24, 2021, 14:11 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A fine by Sweden's data protection authority on a school, for its use of facial recognition to record students' attendance, has been confirmed by a national court, the regulator said in a statement today. The watchdog, known as IMY, had in 2019 imposed a fine of 200,000 kronor ($23,500) on the school in the northern town of Skellefteå for violating the EU's GDPR rules. The school appealed the decision. IMY today said that the Administrative Court of Appeal in Stockholm has rejected the appeal, ruling that consent can't be considered voluntarily given, therefore the school can't use consent as a legal basis for the deployment of facial recognition. The school can appeal the ruling to the Supreme Administrative Court, IMY said.Statement follows (in Swedish)....
