External data transfers for ‘criminal law’ reasons fall outside scope of EU data-privacy rules, Jourová says

( July 22, 2015, 10:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: EU justice chief Věra Jourová has said that transfers of data outside the bloc for “criminal law purposes” are excluded from the scope of EU data-protection rules. But, she said, the European Commission’s policy was that personal data held by companies in the EU shouldn’t “in principle, be accessed by or transferred to foreign enforcement authorities outside of formal channels of cooperation.” The answer came in response to a question from assembly members about the commission’s position on a case between the US and Microsoft concerning the disclosure of information stored on Irish servers.The question and the related answer follow:...
