Japan, EU complete first review of data-flow mechanism based on mutual-adequacy decisions

( April 4, 2023, 05:42 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The first review of the Japan-EU data-flow mechanism, based on mutual recognition of the adequacy of each other's data-protection regime, has been completed, Japan’s personal-data protection agency said. According to a joint Japan-EU statement, released by Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission, commission chairperson Mieko Tanno and her counterpart, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, welcomed the successful conclusion of the first review of the adequacy arrangement. The two met in Tokyo. where reports by both sides were adopted on the functioning of their respective adequacy decisions. After data flows based on this mechanism started in 2019, Japan extended its data-protection scope to academia and the public sector. Reynders said convergence between the two sides has increased. Japan and the EU also agreed to explore the possibility of expanding the scope of the EU adequacy decision for Japan, according to the statement. The statement is attached....
