Comment: Google's Fitbit acquisition still has multiple routes in Australia

By James Panichi and Laurel Henning ( December 23, 2020, 07:01 GMT | Comment) -- The rejection of Google’s package of remedies put forward as part of its $2.1 billion play to acquire Fitbit by Australia’s competition authority this week reverberated around the world, as antitrust officials around the globe grapple with a deal involving a significant cache of sensitive data. But the fight for the deal’s Australian clearance is far from over. Even if the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission were ultimately to block the acquisition, previous appeals involving comparable mergers would suggest the matter could be in and out of an Australian court by the end of 2021.In normal times, a decision made by officials in a small jurisdiction thousands of miles from Silicon Valley wouldn’t rate a mention. But with awareness of Google’s data use now at an all-time high, the search giant’s $2.1 billion play for smartwatch maker Fitbit isn’t unfolding in normal times....
