My Health Record opt-out deadline prompts complaint spike, Australian privacy watchdog says

( November 11, 2019, 03:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia's health data-sharing platform, My Health Record, prompted 145 enquiries and 57 complaints to the country's privacy watchdog over the period July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, or OAIC, has said. That's up from the 14 enquiries and eight complaints the watchdog received the previous year. In a statement today accompanying a report on its activity across the digital-health industry over the last year, the OAIC said the spike in activity resulted from the My Health Record system moving from a self-register model to an opt-out model in February 2019. An initial deadline for Australians to opt out of My Health Record was extended due to controversy surrounding the data-sharing program. In a similar report published last week, the government's Digital Health Agency said that My Health Record had suffered 37 data breaches over the period from July 1, 2018 through to June 30, 2019.Full statement follows; annual report is attached. ...
