In a statement published today, the Australian Federal Police said the culmination of the 11-month trial was the result of a “diligent investigation and financial analysis” following initial arrests in what was dubbed “Operation Elbrus.” In the most recent round of sentencing, the Supreme Court of New South Wales hit a Sydney lawyer with a jail term of 12 years for his role in knowingly dealing in proceeds of crime, via amounts blackmailed from offenders who had participated in a syndicate that defrauded Australia’s federal government through unpaid taxes over three years.
