Japan, EU agree to accelerate talks to expand free data-flow coverage to academia, public sector

( June 21, 2024, 02:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japanese and European Union data-protection authorities agreed to accelerate talks to expand the data-flow arrangement to cover academia and the public sector. In a joint statement from Shizuo Fujiwara, the chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, and Vice President Vera Jourova of the European Commission, the two leaders welcomed progress in the discussions regarding the expansion of the EU’s adequacy decision with Japan for personal-data transfer from the private to the public and academic sectors, and agreed to “accelerate the work with a view of concluding their talks as soon as possible.” After the Japanese data protection law was amended in 2021 to cover the academic and public sectors, the PPC has been asking the EU to expand the coverage to ease joint research projects between the two regions.
