Foodstuffs grocery-merger decision delayed for second time by New Zealand competition watchdog

( June 21, 2024, 01:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Plans by owners of New Zealand’s largest grocery retailer Foodstuffs to merge the company’s North Island and South Island operations continues to face regulatory pushback as the decision on the deal gets delayed for a second time. In a media release published today, the New Zealand Commerce Commission said it would publish a “statement of unresolved issues” outlining the regulator’s provisional competition issues with the proposed merger and inviting response from the parties. In a statement of issues published in April, the regulator had flagged issues like increase in the likelihood of coordination between the merged entity and Woolworths, the other major supermarket chain in New Zealand and the possible implications on retail and wholesale supply of groceries in the market. The regulator will publish its decision on Oct.1, 2024.The full statement by the New Zealand Commerce Commission follows:...
