US expands investment ban on Chinese companies

( June 3, 2021, 18:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The White House issued an executive order that would expand an existing ban on securities investments that finance Chinese companies with ties to the Chinese government's military-industrial complex. The order would amend EO 13959, issued Nov. 12, 2020, by creating a more sustainable framework to set restrictions on investments in Chinese defense and surveillance technology firms. The order would prevent US investment from supporting the Chinese defense sector, while also expanding the federal government's ability to "address the threat of Chinese surveillance technology firms that contribute — both inside and outside China — to the surveillance of religious or ethnic minorities or otherwise facilitate repression and serious human rights abuses," the fact sheet said. Statement and fact sheet follow below:...
