Comment: Online platforms look for others to solve UK quandary over age checks for pre-teens

By Frank Hersey ( June 21, 2024, 16:29 GMT | Comment) -- The likes of Apple, Google and Samsung could be well advised to consider how they might reconfigure app stores and operating systems to take UK child users through age assurance for accessing online services. Facial age-estimation technology had been seen by social media platforms as an increasingly effective tool to comply with the UK's Online Safety Act, but the head regulator stressed recently that it wasn't good enough to distinguish 13-year-olds. Platforms may now step up a push to hand responsibility to the app store and operating system providers.The likes of Apple, Google and Samsung may not have had the radio on last Friday when the head of the UK online safety watchdog unexpectedly stressed in an interview that facial age-estimation technology isn’t good enough to use when it comes to young teenagers (see here)....
