District of Columbia says Meta wrongly suggested it isn't liable for disgorgement in addictive algorithms litigation

( June 14, 2024, 22:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The District of Columbia said Meta Platforms incorrectly described the remedy offered under DC's Consumer Protection Procedures Act (CPPA), which lawyers for the attorney general said does allow for restitution on claims that Instagram and Facebook algorithms harmed young users by addicting them to excessive use of the platforms. "At the hearing––and contrary to the statutory language and recent Court of Appeals precedent––Meta attempted to downplay the Attorney General’s restitution authority. Though Meta’s cursory argument about the relief the District might obtain here isn’t ripe for decision at this stage, the Court can easily reject it regardless," DC said in a supplemental brief that also tackled other outstanding issues following a hearing June 6.See attached document....
