South Korea changes data rules to ease burden on SMEs from CISO recruitment

( June 1, 2021, 06:45 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Uniform standards for businesses to follow when appointing an employee to the role of Chief Information Security Officer, or CISO, will be eased, with the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT’s revision of the Network Act receiving approval from the National Assembly and the state cabinet meeting today. Under the revised rule, small and medium-sized businesses will now be able to appoint a mid-senior management level as CISO. Businesses, regardless of their size, had to appoint an executive-level person as CISO, which the Ministry said placed a burden on smaller companies to pay higher salaries, as well as creating and managing a separate data-protection team, led by the CISO. SMEs will now be able to have their employees in charge of other work take up data protection responsibilities as CISO. The old regime will still apply to businesses with total assets of more than $4.5 billion or those with total assets of more than $452 million that are required to reveal data privacy-related information. The statement, in Korean, is attached....
