US trial of former Uber security chief on obstruction charge kicks off in San Francisco with opening statements

Federal prosecutors said Sullivan orchestrated a “comprehensive and calculated” scheme to hide a 2016 data breach affecting millions of Uber users from a probe by the US Federal Trade Commission. But Sullivan's lawyer told a 12-member jury that Uber's current CEO also failed to immediately disclose the data breach to state and federal regulators, and that Sullivan had widely shared details of his team's internal probe of the 2016 breach with others at Uber.In November 2016, an e-mail popped into Uber security chief Joseph Sullivan’s inbox from an oddly named account called johndoughs@protonmail.com. “Hello Joe,” the ungrammatical email began. “I have found a major vulnerability in uber, I was able to dump uber database and many other things.”...
