​Australia prepares laws to force car manufacturers to share data with independent mechanics

( October 30, 2019, 01:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A proposed code of conduct that would force car manufacturers to share data with independent mechanics in Australia will be enshrined in legislation but would provide manufacturers with flexibility in how they go about sharing the information, the Australian government says. In an update on its plans to establish a car-aftermarket code of conduct published this week, Canberra said that feedback it received from stakeholders has convinced it that primary legislation was required to allow “greater flexibility for the scheme’s design.” The Australian government has also indicated that it's considering the establishment of an industry body similar to the United States National Automotive Service Taskforce, to help independent mechanics gain access to service and repair information.The Australian Treasury's consultation update is attached. ...
