Car companies could be forced to share data with mechanics under proposed Australian rules

( February 12, 2019, 09:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A proposed mandatory code of conduct for car manufacturers would ensure that Australian consumers could have their vehicle repaired by the mechanic of their choice and would force car companies to share service and repair information with all mechanics. Proposals put forward today in a government consultation paper include measures to ensure “fair and reasonable dealings between all parties in the motor-vehicle service and repair industry, including facilitating adequate dispute resolution and protecting intellectual property.” The Australian Treasury consultation paper, which is calling for submissions, was issued as part of the government’s stated commitment to ensuring that independent mechanics be given the data required to service cars, following a report by the competition watchdog suggesting manufacturers were withholding information to dominate the auto aftermarket in Australia.The Australian Treasury's consultation paper is attached. ...
