By Ben Brody ( June 14, 2024, 18:14 GMT | Comment) -- T-Mobile’s purchase of UScellular’s wireless business appears likely to draw antitrust scrutiny because of local areas where the two companies are major players and because the closure of T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint in 2020 left the company one of just three legacy national wireless networks. In addition to the potential traditional overlaps in local markets, the deal comes as US antitrust enforcers are deeply skeptical of deals in concentrated industries and are unsympathetic to arguments that transactions will allow secondary players to challenge the dominant firms in those industries.
