Logging companies defend antitrust claims in Oregon antitrust suit

( March 15, 2023, 22:31 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Logging companies said that their US antitrust claims against Malheur Lumber Company and Iron Triangle should be considered holistically to analyze the synergistic impact of their conduct on competition. “Defendants’ monopolization scheme in this case is complex and relies on the combination of anticompetitive tactics and trade restraints that cross-pollinate to achieve their desired outcomes: deprive Iron Triangle’s rivals of contract logging opportunities; suppress the price of timber coming off the Malheur National Forest while limiting Iron Triangles’ rivals’ access to that timber; restrict sawlog output by hoarding timber under contract to increase Iron Triangle’s resale value; and, most importantly, clear the field of potential rivals that might otherwise acquire all or part of the Stewardship Contract when it is rebid in 2023,” they said.
