China formally removes Xiao Yaqing as MIIT minister

He has been replaced by his successor, Jin Zhuanglong, who currently serves as party secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Xiao has been under investigation by the country’s top anti-graft body for suspected violations of party discipline and laws since late July. The decision to remove Xiao from office was made at a session held today by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature. Xiao was named minister of the State Administration for Market Regulation, China’s top competition regulator, in May 2019 and moved to lead the MIIT in July 2020.The statement follows:...
