Apple, Google among 188 companies penalized by South Korea's telecom regulator for location-data violations

The Korea Communications Commission levied fines totaling about 1.2 billion won (about $871,000) after discovering violations during a 2022 audit of 1,287 companies, conducted in accordance with the revised location-information protection act. Apple received a fine of 222 million won for multiple infractions, including failure to properly disclose and obtain consent on terms of service, inadequate disclosure of location-data handling practices and insufficient administrative and technical safeguards.
