Chinese regulators set requirements for medical, health institutions on facial-recognition use

( September 2, 2022, 01:39 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Chinese regulators are asking medical and health institutions to provide alternative means beyond facial recognition to verify identity when they are using the technology, according to a notice on cybersecurity management targeting these institutions. Issued jointly by regulators overseeing national health and disease control and prevention, the notice prohibits these institutions from denying provision of basic services when data subjects don’t consent to collecting facial-recognition data. Such data can’t be used in purposes other than to verify identity, such as in assessing or predicting data subjects' work performance, economic status, health situation, interests, or preferences.
