Data-breach notifications reached record high in Japan after PPC expanded mandate

( June 11, 2024, 05:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japanese data-protection agency handled a record number of data-breach cases in the year to March, as the local municipalities came under the supervision of the Personal Information Protection Commission. According to the PPC's annual report approved today by the government's cabinet, the regulator handled 7,075 cases of data breaches from the private sector, up from 4,217 cases, and 1,159 cases from the administrative organizations, up from 114 cases in the year before. As for enforcement, PPC issued three corrective recommendation and 333 guidance and advice to the private sector, and 132 cases of guidance and advice to the administrative sector.
