Japanese digital advertising to be regulated mainly by digital-platform transparency legislation

( April 27, 2021, 09:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Digital advertising in Japan should be regulated mainly by the digital platform transparency law, a cabinet secretariat’ panel proposed in its final report. The secretariat said the Japanese digital ad market, now bigger than the televised media ad market in terms of spending, has become oligopolistic by platforms such as Google, Yahoo and Facebook. The panel proposes to regulate the market mainly through the Act on Improving Transparency and Fairness of Specified Digital Platforms. Under the draft final report, designated platform operators would be required to disclose information related to ad fraud and other ad-quality issues to the advertisers, key transaction conditions such as changes of system and rule changes to their clients, as well as potential conflicts of interest and self-preferencing and how they would be managed. These issues would be monitored and evaluated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. A summary statement in English is attached....
