Snap settles Illinois biometric privacy lawsuit for $35 million

( August 4, 2022, 20:46 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary:  Snap, parent company of Snapchat, has reached a $35 million settlement in an Illinois class action lawsuit alleging that its use of facial recognition technology violates the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. The lawsuit alleged that Snapchat violated BIPA by collecting and storing the biometric data of individuals who used its lenses and filters, without their consent. Illinois residents who lived in the state after Nov. 17th, 2015, and used Snapchat’s augmented reality features may be eligible for payouts of between $58 and $117. "Compared against other privacy cases, this Settlement provides an exceptional amount of monetary relief to Settlement Class Members," plaintiffs said. See documents below....
