ACLU argues Fourth Amendment should apply to automobile black box downloads

( May 7, 2019, 20:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The American Civil Liberties Union argues in a brief submitted to the Georgia Supreme Court that police should obtain a warrant before downloading data from event data records embedded in virtually every modern automobile. The state court is considering a motion to suppress evidence tied to a double vehicular homicide that occurred in metro-Atlanta in 2014. "Though many may not realize it, these computers can, and will contain unique digital records that track nearly every aspect of one’s driving, including a car’s specific movements, GPS location, steering input, speed, engine throttle and other detailed measurements down to the millisecond," the brief states.See below for the full brief....
