Qantas' Alliance acquisition could harm regional airline competition, Australian watchdog warns

( August 18, 2022, 00:17 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Qantas Airways’ planned acquisition of Alliance Aviation Services could harm competition for air transport services to regional and remote areas in the states of Western Australia and Queensland, Australia’s competition regulator has warned. In a statement of issues published today, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said it remains concerned that the deal would combine two of the top three operators of air transport services in the two states. In a statement today, ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said industry participants expressed “strong concerns about the impact of this proposed acquisition on air-transport services” and warned that there are already “significant barriers” for airlines wanting to enter the market and this deal is likely to increase those barriers. The ACCC has set Nov. 17 as the deadline for a final decision. Full ACCC statement is below; statement of issues is attached. ...
