Comment: US FTC privacy and data security rulemaking process likely to face industry pushback

Nevertheless, a regulator that uses the term “commercial surveillance” is likely to get strong pushback from a personal data industry that fears the FTC has already concluded that some practices must be blocked.When a US company commits a deceptive or unfair privacy violation for the first time, no matter how serious or how many people are affected, the Federal Trade Commission generally is powerless to impose a financial penalty on the perpetrator unless the violation involves children....
