NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank warned by JFTC against predatory pricing of smartphones

By Sachiko Sakamaki ( February 24, 2023, 08:06 GMT | Insight) -- Japan’s three main mobile carriers — NTT Docomo, KDDI and SoftBank —were warned not to offer excessive discounts on smartphones to their sales agents, which sell devices for as low as 1 yen (less than $0.01) to consumers, because those practices could be regarded as predatory pricing. The Japan Fair Trade Commission raised fresh competition concerns in the smartphone market in which a new entrant, cheaper carriers and used-device retailers continue to struggle to break the dominance of the three main carriers, despite previous efforts by regulator to bring about fair competition.
