Liebherr says it didn't break the law after probing South Africa corruption claims

( October 16, 2017, 12:20 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Swiss heavy-industry equipment maker Liebherr said today that it didn't break the law after investigating corruption allegations in South Africa. The company's Irish unit, Liebherr Container Cranes, is suspected of having paid companies linked to the influential Gupta family to help secure contracts with Transnet, the country's state-owned transport company. The company's internal probe concluded that payments alleged to be corrupt were "legally sound" and "not in violation of any applicable laws or regulations on the part of the Liebherr entities and employees involved." While the original background checks on the Gupta-linked companies "did not indicate any malpractice," the company said its screening process could have been "more stringent" in this instance. Full statement follows. ...
