Edison Energia handed EUR4.9 million GDPR fine in Italy for telemarketing

( February 21, 2023, 14:03 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Electricity and natural gas provider Edison Energia was fined 4.9 million euros by the Italian Data Protection Authority for illegally processing data for unwanted commercial communications. Following the investigation, the regulator found several shortcomings in the company's data processing activities that violated multiple provisions of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, the watchdog said. In particular, it said that the company conducted telephone calls without consent, failed to respond to requests to object, and failed to make it possible for a data subject to express free and specific consent for promotional or profiling purposes. The company availed itself of the right to settle the dispute and paid an amount equal to half of the fine imposed, the regulator said.The statement follows in Italian.
