Comment: US FTC notches steady rise in privacy, other consumer protection cases in 2023 as Khan's tenure evolves

By Mike Swift ( May 17, 2024, 00:05 GMT | Comment) -- The US Federal Trade Commission has achieved a steady increase in both the number of privacy cases and other consumer protection enforcement cases it has brought in recent years, as well as the total penalties it has collected in consumer redress and civil penalties, the agency said in an annual report. While the FTC hasn't reached the zenith it recorded in the 2020 fiscal year when it finalized a $5 billion privacy settlement with Facebook, the 2023 consumer protection numbers show the FTC recorded more than $500 million in redress and fines for the fiscal year, compared to about $325 million the prior year.The US Federal Trade Commission has seen a steady rise in the number of privacy and other consumer protection cases it has brought and the value of fines and consumer redress it obtained as Chair Lina Khan’s term has progressed, data released by the agency this week shows....
