Trump signs six-year extension of surveillance law

( January 19, 2018, 22:43 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: President Donald Trump signed into law an extension of Title VII of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, authorizing interception of communications of foreign targets until Dec. 31, 2023. In a White House statement, the president said he would have preferred a permanent reauthorization and pointed to a new provision aimed at protecting the privacy of Americans whose communications are incidentally collected during surveillance of foreigners authorized under FISA's Section 702. "This new procedure, along with the Act's other oversight and transparency requirements, provides further privacy safeguards, while preserving the operational effectiveness of our foreign intelligence collection efforts," the statement said.Statement follows below:...
