Charging EU clean vehicles 'smartly' could save billions of euros a year, T&E says

( June 4, 2019, 15:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Charging electric cars at the best time of the day for the grid could save France, Italy, Spain and the UK each between 500 million and 1.3 billion euros a year by reducing the need for additional power generation and storage, according to a new study commissioned by lobby group Transport & Environment, energy companies Enel and Iberdrola, and carmaker Renault. “But to take advantage, the EU and governments must ensure all new e-charging infrastructure is capable of smart charging,” T&E said. The study, by Element Energy, also finds that Europe lacks the capacity to recycle batteries used in electric cars, missing the chance to reuse them for storage.Statement follows.
