Amazon’s Twitch avoids UK investigation with changes to protect under-18s, avoiding investigation

( May 13, 2024, 11:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Twitch UK Limited, the UK division of the Amazon-owned computer game streaming platform, has made changes to its service following consultation with the online safety regulator Ofcom. The service has stopped logged-out UK viewers from watching any videos labelled as containing sexual or gambling content, stopped logged-in viewers who have declared they are under 18 from seeing such content and have removed this content plus a wider range including drugs and violence from being shown on the homepage for any viewer category. The changes were made following the watchdog’s concerns whether Twitch was taking appropriate measures to stop under-18s seeing restricted material. The action prevented a formal investigation, but the watchdog has called for more restrictions. Twitch is currently supervised as a video sharing platform but should come under the Online Safety Act later this year, which has further duties.Statement follows:...
