Billions of EU subsidies fund nature harming activities, WWF says

( May 13, 2024, 22:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Member states are using between 34 billion and 48 billion euros of European subsidies annually to fund activities that harm nature, according to a study by WWF. It said that up to 60 percent of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy funding is spent on activities that encourage large-scale unsustainable farming. It added that direct subsidies in other areas such as fisheries, transport infrastructure and water infrastructure are also significant contributors to nature loss. EU governments “must urgently realign public expenditure with environmental and social imperatives,” Tycho Vandermaesen, Policy and Strategy Director at WWF European Policy Office, said.The report is attached below.
