Rome authority questioned over plans for facial, behavior recognition surveillance on metro

The national data protection authority is responding to media reports that ahead of a Vatican jubilee year in 2025 when many visitors are expected, Roma Capitale plans facial recognition to target a watchlist of known individuals and behavior monitoring to pick out disruptive activity. The regulator notes there is a freeze on facial-recognition systems for all except judicial authorities until the end of 2025. Roma Capitale has 15 days to detail its proposed legal basis for the data processing. The EU's AI Act will also limit the use of biometric facial recognition.Statement follows (in Italian)....
