Australian government appoints judges Gleeson, Steward to the country's top court

( October 28, 2020, 01:52 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Two federal judges seen as favoring a black-letter interpretation of the law have been appointed to Australia’s highest court, with the government announcing today that Jacqueline Gleeson and Simon Steward would join the seven-member bench of the High Court of Australia. Gleeson, from the eastern Australian state of New South Wales, is the daughter of former High Court judge Murray Gleeson. Before her appointment to the Federal Court of Australia in 2014, Gleeson was a lawyer specializing in competition and taxation law. Steward, from the southeastern state of Victoria, was appointed to the Federal Court in 2018. The two judges will replace Geoffrey Nettle and Virginia Bell on the High Court.
