US FTC, FCC return to Internet enforcement roles following FCC Title II decision

( April 30, 2024, 19:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission entered into a new memorandum of understanding that returns the FCC to the role of policing net neutrality violations and privacy enforcement of broadband providers, while the FTC focuses on policing online business abuses."The FCC will return to its traditional position as the enforcer of essential rules as they apply to broadband service providers, a critical part of telecommunications infrastructure," the agency said in a joint statement with the FTC. "This includes prohibitions against blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization practices; transparency requirements; consumer protections related to internet service outages; and basic consumer privacy protections which have long applied to phone networks."Text of FCC statement follows in full.
