Malaysian governor-linked Sakto Corp to face Canadian court in money-laundering case

Swiss anticorruption NGO the Bruno Manser Fund is suing the Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Manulife Financial Corp and Deloitte & Touche to disclose financial records on Sakto, which the fund alleges were established using the proceeds of corruption. The Sakto case follows investigations by the NGO of the Taib family, which became extremely wealthy during the time Taib Mahmud served as chief minister of Sarawak, from 1981 to 2014. Taib's family now owns stakes in 400 companies in 25 countries and offshore jurisdictions, including Australian firm Sitehost, owner of Adelaide's A$50 million ($38 million) Hilton hotel, which a 2015 report by the NGO alleges was used to launder tens of millions of dollars....
